Wind Vane Recalibration

This morning at Ptero Cliffs a scheduled system operation began to recalibrate wind vanes and anemometers. After a week of heightened nesting activity and unpredictable gusts along the bluff, the decision was made to carry out preventative checks on the equipment that monitors local thermal and shear conditions.

A temporary hold on fledging flights for juvenile Pteranodons is recommended until the work is complete: artificial perch adjustments and sensor resynchronization will help prevent sudden changes in lift during initial take-offs. Engineers are working alongside field naturalists to stream telemetry live and observe adult responses to the intervention.

Major adjustments are expected to be finished by evening; if wind metrics stabilize, the normal fledging schedule will resume. Visitors on viewing trails are asked to keep to safe distances and heed warden instructions: several upper viewing platforms are temporarily restricted.

This system operation is preventive, aimed at reducing risk during the juveniles’ first independent flights — we continue to monitor sensor status and population behaviour closely.
