Pteranodon Passage
Migration
At dawn over Ptero Cliffs a long, orderly line of Pteranodon was observed: adults and subadults forming a wedge and setting a southerly course toward Chalk Lagoon. The movement appears deliberate — veteran males lead while younger birds keep to the protected center of the ‘stream,’ reducing exposure to wind and potential predators.
Staff report the migration proceeds at a measured pace with intermittent stops on ridge thermals. This is not a hurried passage but a seasonal re-positioning of daytime foraging and roosting, likely linked to the heightened nesting activity still ongoing on the cliffs.
Park teams are coordinating observations with crews at Chalk Lagoon to monitor how the influx affects local feeding areas and whether any competition with resident species will occur. So far the movement has been calm: the flock’s behavior is cohesive and no intra-flock conflicts have been noted.
