First Trial Flights
Observation
This afternoon the Ptero Cliffs are unusually animated: several adult Pteranodons gather at the cliff edges while juveniles take turns testing the wind. Sea breezes are providing steady lift, and one by one the youngsters make short attempts to leave the rock and hold a glide.
Some juveniles only manage a hop and a brief drift to a lower ledge, while bolder individuals open up longer, graceful glides across the bay. Field teams are marking the trickier landing spots — narrow shelves and jagged outcrops — and adjusting observation positions to keep both birds and watchers safe.
Adults stick close: some meet the fledglings at nest ledges, others patrol below, giving soft calls that seem to guide the learners. The rhythmic beat of leathery wings, sunlight on the sea and the occasional plaintive cry create a vivid, almost intimate scene — a milestone in the young birds' growth as aerial foragers.
Conditions remain under control, but monitoring will continue until the new flyers can land reliably. Keep clear of cliff edges and follow the zone stewards' instructions.
